About Heaton

The name ‘Heaton’ means high town and it is so called because of its position on the hills above the Ouseburn. Today Heaton is a leafy, affluent area of Newcastle close to the centre with a lively student population. Heaton was once home to Newcastle United under their previous name, Newcastle East End F.C. between 1882 and 1892. East End played at the Heaton Junction Ground on Chillingham Road before moving to their current stadium at St. James’ Park.

Angel of the North (7 miles)

The giant steel structure that stands over Tyneside on its hilltop perch is an impressive piece of public art designed by Antony Gormley, one of the UK’s most celebrated sculptors. Unveiled in 1998, the Angel of the North is seen by over 150,000 visitors every year, more than 90,000 drivers on the A1 and is visible from all over the Gateshead area. Controversial when first revealed, the Angel has been whole-heartedly adopted by Geordies and was even draped with a giant Newcastle Number 9 shirt in tribute to local hero Alan Shearer in 1998.
