How to get here
We are located on Runcorn Road, Off Whisby Road, Lincoln, LN6 3QZ. Close to Lincoln Fields Business Park and just four miles from Lincoln city centre.
Lincoln’s history is rich and fascinating. Romans conquered the area in AD 48 building roads and fortifications to keep army veterans from the Roman army safe. The town flourished under Roman rule, and the name Lincoln derives from the Roman Lindum Colonia. Centuries later, the town rose again in importance under the Vikings, enjoying prominence as a trading centre because of its well-served waterways and rivers. Just two years after the Norman Conquest, William I recognised the strategic location of Lincoln and ordered Lincoln Castle to be built. Within 30 years, Lincoln Cathedral was completed
Lincoln endured turbulent times during the dissolution of the monasteries and then the in-fighting of the Civil War. By the Georgian era Lincoln’s fortunes were revived, as the area’s rich farming land benefited from new techniques during the Agricultural Revolution and trade links were once again opened to the city. By the time of the Industrial Revolution and the arrival of the railway links, Lincoln was booming again, as the golden age of steam spawned several leading locomotive, steam engine and agricultural machinery manufacturers in the city.
Lincoln began to excel in heavy engineering, building diesel engine locomotives, steam shovels and all manner of heavy machinery. It was in this city that the world’s first ever tank was invented, designed and built by William Foster & Co. Invaluable to the war effort in both World Wars, a vast quantity of tanks, aircraft, munitions and military vehicles were produced in Lincoln.
There are many important historic attractions to see when you visit Lincoln, making it a fascinating city to visit. The city also boasts a vibrant centre with shops, fancy tearooms, cafes and restaurants including the legendary pie shop Browns. It was frequented by the young T.E. Lawrence when he was writing his memoirs of the Arab insurgence, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, the inspiration for the film Lawrence of Arabia.
Lincoln Cathedral (7 miles)
Commissioned by William the Conqueror, it’s hard to imagine what the Anglo Saxon villagers would have made of this massive structure being erected amidst their modest huts in 1072. Rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 12th Century after the original was destroyed in an earthquake, for over 200 years Lincoln Cathedral was reputed to be the tallest building in the world. Boasting spectacular vaults, flying buttresses and a legendary stone carving known as the Lincoln Imp, the cathedral is one of the most visited attractions in the East Midlands, especially when hosting the popular Lincoln Christmas Market.
Lincoln Castle (6 miles)
Built on the site of a pre-existing Roman Fortress, Lincoln Castle was ordered by William the Conqueror in the late 11th century. Now open to the public as a museum, it was used as a prison until modern times. This is one of the most well-preserved and impressive Norman castles in the country and well worth a visit when you’re staying at the Pride of Lincoln.
Belton House (23 miles)
This classic 17th century Grade I listed house is a well-maintained National Trust property open to visitors all year round. Possessing extensive formal gardens and follies, there’s also a play café where children can let off steam, and an incredible maze and discovery centre. A visit to Belton House means a great family day out is guaranteed and just 30 minutes from our hotel at Grantham.
Doddington Hall (2.6 miles)
This is an impressive example of a late Elizabethan Mansion House and it is still owned, run and lived in by the same family today. And it shows. Every element of the hall is professionally run and maintained to an incredibly high standard. Especially worth visiting around Christmas, Doddington Hall features spectacular Elizabethan gardens, a tempting Farm Shop and a faithfully restored Kitchen Garden. Less than 10 minutes drive from the hotel, Doddington Hall is well worth a visit.
Southwell Racecourse (18 miles)
Whether you’re visiting Southwell Racecourse on a race day to enjoy a flutter or to attend a conference or meeting, the Pride of Lincoln is less than 30 minutes away and a convenient place to stay when at Southwell.
