Tynemouth (15 miles)
On the northern headland of the River Tyne, the picturesque town of Tynemouth still retains many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings, overlooked by the ruins of the 7th century priory and Norman castle. There is over 2,000 years of history in the grounds of Tynemouth Castle and Priory, including a 13th century church with beautiful stained glass windows and a restored gun battery built to defend the Tyne in both World Wars. With its prominent coastal location, this historic site offers beautiful views of the North Sea coast and the River Tyne.
Durham Cathedral & Castle (14 miles)
This iconic Norman cathedral is revered as one of the world’s greatest places of worship and has been a World Heritage Site since 1986. The present cathedral dates from 1093, and treasures include the tomb of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, remains of the Venerable Bede, and exceptional medieval books and manuscripts including The Durham Gospels and copies of the Magna Carta. Opposite the cathedral stands the magnificent Durham Castle, now occupied by University College, Durham.
Beamish Museum (4 miles)
This award-winning open-air museum brings to life the story of the people of the North East throughout the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. The Museum features streets from a North East town around 1913, a typical North Eastern Railway station, a colliery village including a drift mine and a huge collection of artefacts, replica buildings and working vehicles.
The Baltic Centre (5 miles)
A contemporary art gallery based in the landmark Rank Hovis Baltic Flour Mill on the south bank of the Tyne, the Baltic Centre has an ever-changing calendar of contemporary art exhibitions in four galleries showcasing innovative and distinctive work. The centre includes a cinema, a bar, a performance space and a beautiful rooftop restaurant, Six, with breathtaking views of the Tyne bridges.
Metro Centre (5 miles)
If you are looking for retail therapy, then you will surely find it at the Metro shopping centre. With over 340 stores and restaurants, selling the biggest high street brands, it is the largest shopping and leisure centre in Europe, just ten minutes drive from The Ravensworth Arms in Gateshead.
Angel of the North (2 miles)
The giant steel structure that stands over Tyneside on its hilltop perch is an impressive piece of public art designed by Antony Gormley, one of the UK’s most celebrated sculptors. Unveiled in 1998, the Angel of the North is seen by over 150,000 visitors every year, more than 90,000 drivers on the A1 and is visible from all over the Gateshead area, including The Ravensworth Arms Hotel.
