A Norman motte-and-bailey Castle in Hertfordshire, Berkhamsted Castle was built during the Norman Conquest. In the late 15th century the castle was considered old fashioned and not fit for Royal use. By the 16th century, stone was being taken away to build neighbouring houses. Now conserved by English Heritage, the castle ruins and grounds are free to explore.
