Area & Hotel History

The Castle Hotel can be dated back to the 1630’s when it was a farmhouse and part of the Kirby Castle estate.

In the 18th century, one of the towers at Kirby Castle was demolished. Some of the bricks from the tower are said to have been used to repair the Castle farmhouse which now forms the Castle Hotel.

At one time the farmhouse was the largest employer of local people, producing Leicestershire cheese of excellent quality. In the courtyard you can still see elements of the buttery, pantry and a passageway that would have led into the kitchen.

For many years, rumours abounded of a network of secret passages that ran from Kirby Castle to the Old White House, a Grade II listed building in the village, and beyond as far as Bradgate. Though there is no evidence that this was ever the case, in 1975 a short passage from the Castle to the hotel was uncovered.

The estate eventually came up for sale in 1918, bringing to an end centuries of farming tradition. The Castle farmhouse lived on, however, eventually becoming a guesthouse and then the Castle Hotel. Eagle-eyed guests will spot many of the original period features in both the bar and bedrooms of the hotel.

Local Attractions

About Kirby Muxloe

Kirby Muxloe is an attractive leafy village just 4.5 miles from the centre of Leicester. Less than a mile from Junction 21 of the M1, it makes an excellent stop-off destination for commuters, especially with its scenic open views of the Leicestershire countryside.

The village has a long and fascinating history dating back as far as the 9th century. It was during this period that a Dane known as Caeri started the first community here and the village, then called Carbi was recorded in the Domesday Book.

By 1474, William Hastings acquired the manorial right to Kirby, having rented it for some years prior, and in 1480 he began to build KirbyMuxloeCastle and its moat. Work stopped in 1484 after Lord Hastings was beheaded for treason. Though it would never be finished, it has undergone some major restoration work, courtesy of English Heritage, and stands as the village’s most prominent landmark.

In 1941, Kirby was severely bombed by the Germans, as they returned from an attack on Coventry. A number of houses and a church were destroyed. The gaps left between the houses following the bombardment can still be seen to this day.

The village is also home to a 14th century church and many attractive 1920s Swiss style buildings.
