During the 1860’s rail engineer James Knox was passing through Stockingford station on a train. Passing a freshly excavated section, he recognised a seam of Etruria marl clay visible on the side of the track. As a young civil engineer he would have been familiar with the types of clay found in railway construction and he later returned and opened a factory close to this site. That company, which became one of the biggest employers in Nuneaton with three huge sites in the area, was the Haunchwood Brick & Tile Company. Haunchwood gained a reputation for producing high quality bricks which were exported from Nuneaton all over the world, and used in some of the landmark buildings in the area, including the magnificent Nuneaton flour mill which dominated the centre of the town until its demolition in 1972.
The Chase was built for his large family in 1899 using the finest Haunchwood Blue bricks and fittings from his own factories as a showcase for his products. Knox had a very successful career and fathered nine sons, of which most saw action in World War I and one, Cecil, was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery under enemy fire. The Chase remained the Knox family home until the death of James Knox’s wife, Florence, in 1936.
The Chase became a hotel after World War II under the ownership of Ansells Brewery.
The name Nuneaton derives from the Benedictine Nunnery around which much of the town was built. With a thriving centre and bustling high street, all the essential amenities close at hand.
