The Two Brewers began as an alehouse in 1799. Initially it consisted of three old cottages but it is now a charming English inn overlooking a village green where cricket is played. Guests regularly take their drinks out on to the green on sunny days.
In the 19th century, the pub acquired fame as the training quarters for many prize boxers of the day. Jem Mace, an English boxing champion, famous for a particular ‘dancing style’ that allowed him to outwit heavier boxers than him trained there. So too did Tom Sayers, a bare-knuckle prizefighter who was considered a national hero, so much so crowds lined the street as his funeral cortege journeyed to London’s Highgate Cemetery after his death. Bob Fitzsimmons made boxing history as the sport’s first three-division world champion. All these men sparred in the Club Room at The Two Brewers and exercised around the village green.
The Two Brewers was also a regular drinking spot for Peter Sellers, who lived across the green in Chipperfield Manor from 1959 until 1961. Movie stars and directors like Stanley Kubrick often joined Sellers at the house and he would bring them over to the pub for a drink. He bought the property in Chipperfield within minutes of seeing it after spotting an advertisement in The Sunday Times.
A tranquil and picturesque English village, Chipperfield is a delightful place with an active parish and a strong sense of community. The ‘Common’, which includes the village green, is a favourite with villagers and visitors. Cricket matches take place in the summer and locals often watch the game with a picnic or a drink from the Two Brewers. Part of the ‘London commuter belt’, Chipperfield is a lovely retreat after a busy day in the city.
